On Wednesday 2nd October, The Coleshill School was forced to enter a full lockdown in the afternoon, following a student was found possessing a weapon.
A student notified staff members at the end of lunch time and radio messages were quickly spread across the school, with the instruction of getting all students into their classes and to lock the rooms to prevent anybody being harmed. It was first believed that they had possession of a compass, but it was later revealed to have been a knife
Headteacher Miss R Brindley said: "It is simply unacceptable. Students shouldn't have to fear being at school and we will be evaluating the situation and find ways to prevent something like this from ever happening again."
When discussing the process of neutralizing the problem, she said: "I believe we delt with the situation in the best way we possibly could. We acted swiftly to make sur everyone was safe and after contacting his parent, the child eventually handed over the knife. Nothing like this has ever happened at this school so it really is a shame, as it damages the reputation, and the students and parents may be anxious about coming to the school."
It was later revealed that the Year 8 student was using the weapon as self-defence, but he admitted that it was wrong, and the lockdown was unnecessary, but this highlights that bullying is still a huge issue in school and can make the most harmless children turn to violence for protection.
Emma Flower, mother of a student in the school, gave her view on the situation. She said "I was shocked when my son came home and told me about everything that happened. I was unsure on whether to send him into school the next day, but this was the first time this has ever happened at this school, and the way the staff dealt with the issue reassured me."
